About the NERSHH Program

New England Regional Sustainable Housing and Homelessness (NERSHH) Program

This unique program aims to ensure better outcomes by strengthening the capacity of specialist homelessness services and providing intensive service coordination for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. NERSHH provides support across the broader New England Region, with a particular interest in communities that have limited supports available to them.

The primary goal for service provision in the NERSHH program is early intervention, ensuring people are supported to address any barriers to sustaining a tenancy before homelessness occurs. Barriers may include but are not limited to issues such as mental health, drug and/or alcohol use, property care, budgeting skills, vulnerability, daily living skills, and/or domestic and family violence. The NERSHH program supports the following target groups:

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Young people
  • Women, Men and families
  • Individuals or families with complex needs
  • People exiting correctional facilities
  • People with multiple occurrences of homelessness

The NERSHH program also facilitates Homelessness Action Teams across the region which develop and implement various programs and events to raise awareness and address impacts of homelessness in community.

About the Opportunity

As the Housing and Homelessness Coordinator, you will be working within the New England Regional Sustainable Housing and Homelessness (NERSHH) program to reduce homelessness by identifying and supporting families and individuals who are at imminent risk of homelessness to remain safely in their existing housing or to secure stable housing. In this role, you will work to ensure better outcomes for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness by strengthening the capacity of homelessness services and achieving a better balance of prevention, early intervention and crisis support.

To be successful in this role, you will have an understanding of homelessness and the comorbidity with factors such as mental health issues, alcohol and other drug abuse, domestic and family violence. You will advocate for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and work with people in a non-judgemental and strengths focused manner.

You will be responsible for:

  • Service coordination to ensure the best outcome for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, including coordination and facilitation of case conferencing.
  • Coordinating and facilitating Homelessness Action Teams across the region to raise awareness and address the impacts of homelessness within the community.
  • Assessing the suitability of broker utilisation in supporting people to gain and sustain tenancies.
  • Maintaining the budget for allocated brokerages.
  • Coordinating and facilitating early intervention programs and community awareness events.
  • Providing capacity building support to Specialist Homelessness Services as necessary.

You will also contribute to the four Specialist Homelessness Service program level outcomes:

  • People who are at imminent risk of homelessness are identified and supported to remain safely in their existing housing or to secure stable housing.
  • People who experience homelessness are rapidly and safely rehoused.
  • People who are in crisis are provided with safe and secure accommodation and supported to access stable housing.
  • People who are rehoused after becoming homeless are supported to stay housed.
